Magic - An overview
Colloquially, Magic often refers to the Old Magics, stored securly in the Items of the Before Times. However, a mass number of reports have flooded in of those claiming to see witches and covens casting what can only be described as magic without the use of such items. Until historians can agree upon a better name, such magic will be refered to as New Magic. Little is known about either. Items that store Old Magic cannot be taken apart easily - though what we can tell, disassembling and then reassembling does not deminish of effect the magic stored within the object. There are no objects from the Before Times that lack magic, therefore it is hard to assertain what makes then magical without a control group.
Old Magic
A leftover of some event that removed most of history from Obojima. Relics from the Before Times are sturdy and easily identifable. They aren't so common place that one may find them suspicous or rare, but they aren't easy to find, either. Most are sold at a high price, though often they warrent such fuss as obtaining one makes a Feyfolk a magic user.
Spells stored inside these items vary, and spells seem to be able to change dependent on the user and the item used to cast it; though the effect remains the same. Spells cast via items don't seem to have a negative effect on the user unless the is the goal (such as a 'curse' that backfires) but casting a simple water-creation spell hardly even tires the caster. Intrestingly, items seem to have a limit as to how many spells they can cast a day. How they recharge is largely unknown, however most reliably recharge every 24-hours.
Old Magic - Items
It is important to note that Old Magic items are not imprevious and will break under enough stress. The AHA guild Old Magic department is working to find a way to repair such broken objects however no breakthroughs have been made.
Also note that these are not all the relics that exist within Obojima. Most user's allowed us to look at their items, but not all. Likewise, new types of items seem to appear in the Vending Machines. The cause of this is unknown, and makes classifying them hard.
Cassette Player -- Most utilize 'Tapes' that can be found around the island. The type of spell determines the song trapped inside the various tapes. Some are labeled 'The 90's', 'The 80's', 'Biggest Hits of the 2000's' and so forth. It is not apparent what these labels refer to. Most researchers agree it is in reference to a time period - perhaps parts of the Before Times - but there lacks significant data to support this theory.
Video Recorder -- Spells such as Teleportation and Enrapture can be cast via this device if one can learn the correct button combination. Beyond the types of spells that can be cast through these devices, the AHA guild has found little use for them. While casting magic, the user can capture an impression of what they are looking at. This image is stored in an internal area of the device that is only accessible when connected to a computer. Images cannot be transferred to anything other then the computer. It is unknown if taking impressions is harmful to those captured in the image. As such, most of the impressions captured and stored here are drawings meant to recreate reality. ![]() Vending Machine -- Despite their bright colors, these machines seem to blend into the landscape around them. Stocked with various items, sometimes Relics sometimes food or water, vending machines are seen as a gift from Obojima herself. Oddly, the amount of items they offer seems to be linked, or dependent, on the state of the lands near by. For example, if a village is experiencing a drought, the nearby Vending Machines will produce less items but a higher percentage of those items will be drink. If the land nearby is left without folk intervention, they seem to produce nuts, berries, or any other food the local wildlife may find of import. Efforts to find who or what is stocking these machines have all come back with little information. It seems as though they magically restock themselves as soon as no one is around. The leading theory is that Vending Machines are a type of plant, supported by the fact that they appear at crossroads. Efforts to find a juvenile or blossoming Vending Machine have been fruitless. So far, there appear to be no negative effects of taking the items from a vending machine; though AHA recommends all folk exercise caution when doing so.
Computer -- Arguably the most researched relic, and one we hope the user is familiar with. The computer used to be rendered useless without a dedicated user. Utilizing Mushrooms, researchers at the AHA guild were able to find a suitable source the power the computers. Though connected to each other, the computer is not able to use the mushroom's network of roots to connect to other computers. The AHA Collective is created in one village, copied into a Floppy Disk and taken to other villages to be shown there. Pictured - Wellby Grimsbane with the first viable computer. Impression captured via Video Recorder. Dr.Grimsbane volunteered to be captured, and as of recent news, has only suffered a headache since the impression was taken. |
New Magic
Most have reported Witches and Covens being the sole users of New Magic. Due to their reclusive nature it is hard to obtain data. The Coven that has spoken to the AHA Guild did provide data, however it was not measurable at this time. Below is a quote from Haldana Sunmantle . " It's like a song - A feeling or a pulsing deep inside. A kind of thought - it's there and it's always been there. It's a part of you, but something intentional at the same time. You but... if it's you should it take effort? Hmmm, sorry. I never was good at explaining. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's natural. I'm surprised you can't do it too. Though I suppose in it's own way that makes sense - we don't all walk the same. "
It should be noted that those from Sunmantle's home village had trouble recognizing the folk. Many indicate , annoyingly politely as is the way of their village, that Sunmantle looked different and had questioned whether or not they had been 'working out'. This has led researchers to believe Sunmantle looked vastly different then what they look like now, though villagers were allusive and reluctant to give a clear answer when pressed. Attached is an artist's sketch of Sunmantle. |
